The theme : Roots in the service of plants
In general, the parts of plants above ground are the subject of admiring comment. Far more seldom do you hear someone going into ecstasies over their underground component: the roots. Of course, all gardeners know that their condition determines the state of health of a plant, and that many of them are both beautiful and delicious to eat.
Today, the work of scientists has shed further light on the close bond that unites the components above and below ground. The root system plays a capital role; it anchors the plant, absorbs water and minerals and stores nourishment. For this purpose, it joins forces with fungi and bacteria in the soil. Substances are transmitted from tree to tree via the roots and affiliated fungi, meaning that old trees can nurture younger ones by sending them food. Information also circulates via the roots when foliage comes under attack. Plants therefore use their roots to communicate. These thousands of underfoot connections form a plant-based network known as the “Wood Wide Web”.
Whatever they may look like, these little-known underground components deserve a great deal of tender loving care.
